Zlatko Trkanjec, MD, PhD

Prof. Zlatko Trkanjec graduated in 1982 from School of Medicine, University of Zagreb, specialization in neurology was carried out in the Varaždin General Hospital and in Sestre Milosrdnice University Hospital. In 1991 he attained Master of science degree, and in 1999 he attained Ph.D. degree at School of Medicine, University of Zagreb. In 2008 he was elected as scientific advisor, and since 2009 he is professor in the Department of Neurology, Faculty of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb.

Since 1986 he was working as a doctor in the Hospital for Lung Diseases and Tuberculosis Klenovnik and from 1996th as a neurologist at the Department of Neurology, Sestre Milosrdnice University Hospital in Zagreb.

He has published more than 200 papers in national and international journals, numerous book chapters and books, and was a mentor of several graduation theses.

He has participated in several scienftific projects, and from 2007-2014 he lead scientific project of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia: The role of vascular risk factors in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease.

He participated in the organization of numerous scientific and professional meetings, symposia, conferences and congresses. He is a member of numerous national and international professional and scientific associations. He is one of the editors of the journal Acta Clinica Croatica. For his work he received several awards.

Vanja Bašić Kes, MD, PhD

Professor Vanja Bašić Kes, MD, PhD obtained her M.D. with thesis honours at the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb (Croatia). She specialized in Neurology and subsequently obtained a Masters and a Doctorate degree in Clinical Neurology (Ph.D.). Her professional training included Fellowship in Neurology at the King’s College Hospital in London, United Kingdom and at the Weill Cornell in Salzburg, Austria. Professor Bašić Kes holds her professional appointments at the University of Zagreb (School of Dental Sciences), and University of Osijek (School of Medicine), Croatia, where she has been engaged as Professor and Assistant Professor of Neurology, respectively. She carries out clinical work and research, and teaches at graduate and postgraduate levels, and serves as regular Member of the National Croatian Scientific Advisory Board. She is the principal investigator of several major international studies on multiple sclerosis, rare diseases in neurology and on safe implementation of stroke treatments in Eastern Europe. She is also a Senior Associate of the Faculty of the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb. Professor Bašić Kes has been appointed Head of University Department of Neurology and Lead of Neuroimmunology and Neurogenetics Unit, at the Sestre milosrdnice University Hospital Centre. Her professional highlight is the establishment of the Referent Centre for the Management of Acute and Chronic Pain, and the Referent Centre for Neuroimmunology and Neurogenetics, at the University Department of Neurology, both acknowledged by the Croatian Ministry of Health. Prof. Bašić Kes is the leading expert in the field of neuroimmunology and neurogentics. Her current research interest focuses on the remyelination, recovery and novel treatment options in multiple sclerosis. She implemented the Croatian Guidelines for the Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis and launched the first international biannual Neuroimmunology and Neuroimmunology congress. Professor Bašić Kes serves as the President of the Croatian Society for Neurovascular Disorders, the President of the Croatian Neuroimmunology and Neurogenetics Society, the President of the Croatian Society for Pain and the President of the Croatian Society for Stroke. She is also an Honorary Member of numerous professional associations and advisory boards, both national and international. Prof. Bašić Kes has published more than 300 articles in scientific journals, authored or co-authored several books and edited a number of others. She is also a member of editorial and advisory board and deputy editor of the Acta Clinica Croatica journal.

Dijana Zadravec, MD, PhD

Dijana Zadravec, MD, PHD, is an assistant professor of general and dental radiology (since 2013) and head of General and dental radiology department at the University of Zagreb, School of Dental medicine (since 2015). She is head of Clinical department for diagnostic and interventional radiology and Clinical unit for neuroradiology, head, neck and dental radiology at the Sestre Milosrdnice University Hospital Center . She is also head of Referral center for radiologic prevention, diagnostics, therapy and rehabilitation of head and neck diseases of the Ministry of health, Republic of Croatia, at the University Hospital Center Sisters of Mercy in Zagreb. Assistant professor Zadravec is also currently employed as Deputy Director of Sestre Milosrdnice University Hospital Center.

She has worked in medical education for the last 9 years. She is head of PhD doctoral study at School of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb (theme Digital radiologic diagnostic of head and neck tumors) and head of postgraduate specialist study (theme Radiologic digital imaging methods of head and neck). She also takes part in other undergraduate and postgraduate courses at School of Dental medicine and School of Medicine at the University of Zagreb. According to the polls, she was honoured as the best lecturer at the School of Dental medicine, University of Zagreb, for the academic year 2012/13.

She is a scientific collaborator since 2011.

She is a various project and research collaborator: The role of oxidative stress and opiorfine in the

temporomandibular dysfunctions (Croatian science foundation, 2015), Diagnostic and terapy of the neodontogenic painful conditions in the orofacial region (2013), Diagnostic of neurogenic and musculoskeletal painful diseases in the orofacial region (2014) and Orofacial pain and osteoarthritis of the temporomandibular joint (2015).

Dijana Zadravec was born in Čakovec on September 5th, 1973, and is Croatian by nationality.

She graduated from math-natural science highschool „Josip Slavenski“ in 1992 in Čakovec. She enrolled the School of Medicine at Zagreb University in 1992, from which she graduated in 1998. She worked as a general practitioner (1999-2000) and in an emergency department (2000-2003). She specialised in radiology (2003-2007) and subspecialised in neuroradiology (2009-2011).

Doctoral degree in Biomedicine and health was obtained at the Zagreb School of Medicine in 2010, the thesis being titled „Comparative analysis multislice computed tomography and magnetic resonance of malignant tumors of the maxillofacial region“.

She took postgraduate trainings in dental radiology at the Department of Oral Radiology at Helsinki University Center Hospital in Finland (2011), a course in Magnetic resonance imaging of Head and neck in Belgium (2014), and attended the Pierre Lasjaunias European course of Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology, 13th Cycle, organized by ESNR (European Society of Neuroradiology) and therefore has a European Diploma in Neuroradiology (2016).

Her scientific interest is neuroradiology, dental radiology and head and neck radiology, especially head and neck oncology and temporomandibular joint disorders.

She is an author of university textbooks Dental Radiology (2016), Neuroimunology (2015) and Professional diseases and diseases connected to dentists (2015), Melanoma (2015) and Abdominal ultrasound (2015).
She had published more than 30 articles  in internationally indexed journals.

She lectured and moderated at many domestic and international meetings and congresses, where she had given more than 60 presentations in Croatian and English.

She is a member of ESNR (European Society of Neuroradiology), ESHNR (European Society of Head and Neck Radiology), CSR (Croatian Society of Radiology) and member of Neuroradiology Section of CSR.

Iva Kirac, MD, PhD

Iva Kirac is a surgical oncology and abdominal surgery specialist working at the University Hospital for Tumors, University Hospital Center Sestre Milosrdnice.  As a surgeon, Iva gained experience through education in Prague, Padua, Paris, New York, Boston and Tokyo with main interest being gastrointestinal malignancies both in clinical and translational settings. In collaboration with University of Edinburgh, Iva defended her PhD thesis in sporadic cancer genetics at Medical School, University of Zagreb. Following the trend of applied genetics she was a part of the team founding the Genetic Oncological Counseling Unit at University Hospital for Tumors. Part of the unit is dedicated to the research of tumor heterogeneity, selective therapy response and blood biomarkers in colon and breast cancer. These activities introduced her as a member to COST action and COGENT consortium and made an active collaborator in the SOCCS study; she is currently an author on 27 indexed publications (Nature Genetics, PloSone, Surgical Endoscopy), coauthor on a book chapter, and coeditor of a surgery textbook.

Tomislav Čengić, MD

Tomislav Čengić has completed his medical degree at School of Medicine University of Rijeka (Croatia) in 2009. During his medical studies he was an international fellow at the Department of Critical care and emergency medicine, Hyogo Medical College (Japan) under supervision of Professor Seishiro Marukawa.

Regarding his clinical education, Tomislav has completed the Orthopaedics and Traumatology Resident Teaching Program at the University of Zagreb (Croatia) in 2014. He is currently appointed as a resident in orthopaedic surgery and traumatology focused on lower extremity trauma and adult reconstruction surgery. He attended orthopaedic surgery courses at the University of Basel (Switzerland) and Harvard medical School, Boston (USA). In December 2014 he obtained his Clinical and research fellowship at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University Hospital Basel. He joined the Osteoarthritis Research Center Basel in September 2014, where he is member of Dr. Jeroen Geurts’ team and their research focus is the role of marrow and inflammatory cells in subchondral bone remodeling in osteoarthritis. He is an active member of EFORT (European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology) and SICOT (Société Internationale de Chirurgie Orthopédique et de Traumatologie).

Since 2011 Tomislav is a PhD candidate at Zagreb School of Medicine investigating the Pathogenesis of osteoarthritis. He is author of 3 books, 14 research papers and 15 conference papers. In 2015 he was awarded with Republic of Croatia State Award for Technical Culture, Faust Vrančić for the project 3D titanium laser sintering patient made implant. Currently he is attending his clinical fellowship at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore London (UK).

Mario Zovak, MD, PhD

Mario Zovak, MD, PhD, assistant professor, graduated at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Zagreb.  In August 1991, as a volunteer, joined Croatia Headquarters Medical Corps. Specialist in general surgery since 1996, with further interests in oncological and hepatobiliary surgery and trained in Paris, at L’Hôpital Beaujon, the Department of Digestive Surgery under prof. J. Belghiti.

He finished postgraduate study “Ultrasound in Clinical Medicine” in 1992, and Postgraduate doctoral studies at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Zagreb. He is consultant subspecialist in abdominal (digestive) surgery and subspecialist in surgical oncology.

He received Ph.D. with doctoral research and thesis “Correlation of extranodal deposits and clinicopathological factors in patients treated for mucinous colorectal cancer” in 1998.

In 2011 he was elected assistant professor at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Zagreb as well as senior scientific associate at the University of Zagreb. Also in 2011 he was elected the Head of the Department of Surgery, University Hospital Centre “Sestre milosrdnice”.

He actively participated in prestigious national and international conferences and published a number of scientific and professional papers.

A member of the Croatian Surgical Society, Croatian Society Coloproctologists, Croatian Society of digestive surgeons, hepatobiliary International Association, the International Association of Surgeons and Gastroenterologists.

For many years, serving as a high specialist (expert) of the Commission for Professional Issues and Expert Control Croatian Medical Chamber.

Boris Ružić, MD, PhD

Boris Ružić was born in 1957. in Rijeka, where he graduated from Medical School, University of Rijeka. He passed Board exam in urology in 1993. and since then works as a urologist at the Department of Urology, UHC “Sestre milosrdnice”, Zagreb. He subspecialised urologic oncology and andrology. He completed his postgraduate studies in urology at the Medical School, University of Zagreb. He acquired the title Masters of science in 2002. and defended his doctoral thesis (PhD) in 2003. He became research associate in 2004. at the Medical University of Zagreb where he was elected teaching assistant in 2011. and assistant professor in 2015. He also developed academic career abroad as assistant professor at the Medical School, University of Mostar in 2007, and associate professor in 2011. Prof. Ružić holds lectures at the University of Applied Health Sciences in Zagreb since 2009. as a college professor. He holds title Primarius since 2004.
As of 2015. he has been appointed Head of the Department of Urology, UHC “Sestre milosrdnice”, Zagreb.
Prior to his current position at the Department of Urology prof. Ružić held several positions: Head of the Endourology Division and Deputy Head of the Department. He served as an Assistant Director for healthcare quality of UHC “Sestre milosrdnice for four years. Prof. Ružić was trained in internationally recognized institutions abroad and at home. He authored and co-authored 90 scientific and professional papers in international and national peer-reviewed journals and worked on four scientific projects. He participated in the organization of numerous scientific and professional conferences as a member or chairman of the Organizing Committee. The Assembly and the president of the Croatian Medical Association, awarded him three times in the recognition of his outstanding contribution in fostering honorable tradition of the Croatian Medical Association, medical science and healthcare in the Republic of Croatia. He participates in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the Medical University in Zagreb, Osijek and Mostar and the University of Dentistry in Zagreb and at the University of Applied Health Sciences in Zagreb. He is the author and co-author of several of academic textbooks (“Diseases of the urogenital system” ,”Clinical Oncology”, “Prostate cancer” , “Supportive and palliative treatment of cancer patients” and “Clinical Oncology II”). Prof. Ružić was the editor of the Book of Abstracts of the 5th Croatian urological congress with international participation. He is a member of the Croatian Association of Urology where he served as a secretary and a treasurer and a member of the Board of Croatian Society of Oncology. Since 2010. Minister of Health and Social Welfare appointed prof. Ružić a member of the Board examination commetee in Urology. He gave lectures at a number of professional meetings, symposia and congresses in the country and abroad. He mentored two master’s theses, one doctorate and a number of medical and nursing colledge students.

Aleksandar Včev, MD, PhD

Viktor Peršić, MD, PhD

Viktor Persic, M.D., Ph.D., was born in 1967 in Rijeka. He became a specialist of internal medicine in 1999, and specialist in cardiology 2009. Since then he permanently acts as a specialist in internal medicine-cardiologist at the Specialized hospital for medical rehabilitation of cardiac, pulmonary and rheumatism diseases – Thalassotherapia Opatija where he hold the position of Head of the Clinic for treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of heart diseases and blood vessels. In year 2014 he became the general manager of the Hospital.

His professional activities also include, along with continuing education in top European cardiology institutions (Institute of Cardiology in University Hospital, Bologna, Sophia Antipolis Heart House in Nice, Hammersmith Hospital in London, and University Hospital in Essen), independent action in comprehensive noninvasive cardiac diagnosis with particular emphasis on transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging of the heart. Under the leadership of Viktor Peršić,M.D., Ph.D., cardiac activity of the hospital – Thalssotherapia Opatija, significantly improve the scope and quality of services, gained recognition in professional circles with special emphasis on the development of new services, notably the creation of a center for imaging in cardiology. It also is an active participant in public health campaigns dealing with the popularization of the measures for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. He has participated in many professional and scientific conferences and has led numerous organizational committees of the Croatian echocardiographic symposium with international participation as well as the organizational and scientific conferences of the Croatian Society of Cardiology. Viktor Persic, M.D., Ph.D., possesses many years of teaching experience in the field of cardiology in courses in Internal medicine at the School Of Medicine –  University of Rijeka and Osijek, as well as important scientific research results. Since 2008, holds the position of Head of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the School of Medicine – University of Rijeka. He is an active member of the Croatian Society of Cardiology, a member of its Board of Directors and Chairman of the Working Group for rehabilitation and prevention of cardiovascular diseases of the Croatian Society of Cardiology.

Dalibor Karlović, MD, PhD

Vanja Vučićevć Boras, MD, PhD

Vanja Vučićević Boras was born on 10.9.1971 in Zagreb.

She finished Classical Gymnasium in Zagreb and School of Dental medicine in 1997 She did her MS thesis in 2000 and PhD thesis in 2003.

She finished residency in oral medicine in 2004 and became specialist in oral medicine. In the year 2006 she became assistant professor. During 2005 and 2006 she was attending postdoctoral studies at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia.

She is an author of two books: Oral Medicine-from diagnosis till therapy (2005) and Infection control procedures in dental setting (2008), and is coauthor on the following books: Differental diagnosis in dental radiology (2011)(as a editor and coauthor) and Advances in Oral and maxillofacial surgery – Low Level Laser Therapy (coauthor), INTECH, 2013; Local anesthesia in dentistry (2015) (coauthor). She is author and coauthor of around 100 articles, of which 35 are indexed in CC. She is cited 339 times. Her RG score is 33.

Gordana Ramljak, MA

Gordana Ramljak was born in Zagreb and graduated from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb.  From 1989 to 2010, she worked in the Library of the University Hospital of Traumatology in Zagreb and gathered rich experience in all kinds of library work and library management as graduated librarian and hospital library head. In 2014, she was awarded the professional title of Senior Librarian by the Croatian Ministry of Culture.

In 2011, she was appointed Head of Central Library and two branch libraries of the Sestre milosrdnice University Hospital Center. At the same time she joined the Editorial Team of the journal Acta Clinica Croatica as a Technical Editor and immediately sorted out the manuscript and journal archives along with other records kept in the Editorial Office, introduced computer–based work and reorganized the editorial workflow.  In a short period of time, she managed to resolve delays in publishing of printed and electronic (online) journal issues, the latter freely available on the HRCAK portal.  Aided by a graduated journalist employed in the Editorial Office in July 2013, she achieved further advancement in the operational efficiency of the editorial and publishing process. The number of authors and published manuscripts increased in 2011 and the journal impact factor began to rise gradually.

At present she is responsible for coordination of manuscript management through all stages of submission, peer review, proof-reading, language editing, printing and online-publishing. She also takes care of administrative work and Editorial Office organization.

Vedran Jerbić holds an MA degree in Journalism, International Relations, and European Studies, all from the Faculty of Political Science University of Zagreb.

He is currently a PhD student on the Department of Political Theory at the Faculty of Political Science in Zagreb.
